Worst Prospects of 2015: Luis Carreno

Luis Carreno
New York Mets pitching prospect Luis Carreno (34) pitches against the Miami Marlins at the Mets Minor League Facility in Port St. Lucie, Fla., May 11, 2015.

Every year the experts at Baseball America and MLB Pipeline compile their lists of the top 100 prospects in the minors and the top 20 for each major league team. Some of these players do make the show, but many never make it out of low minors. While Mets fans anxiously awaited the arrivals of top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Michael Conforto in 2015, there’s a core of players that will never see Citi Field unless they buy a ticket. Here’s one of the 10 worst prospects in the Mets system in 2015.

The New York Mets signed 16-year-old right-handed pitcher Luis Carreno to a minor-league contract in March 2012.

Carreno made his debut two months later in the Dominican League with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings of work.

Well, things went downhill after that when he was lit up in the next eight games covering 15 innings, surrendering 16 runs on 24 hits with two blown saves.

In 2013 he did not fare much better.

His ERA was 40.50 at the start of the season, but he managed to reduce the toll and finish the season 1-3 with an ERA of 9.98 in 16 appearances.

His lively arm did amass a total of 31 punch-outs in 30.2 innings of work in the Dominican League.

2014 looked like a breakthrough season for Carreno despite a losing record of 2-5.

His 1.60 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 56.1 innings of work as the opposition hit just .203 against him impressed scouts, despite 27 walks.

In 2015 Carreno took a step backward, as he threw grapefruits over the plate, going 0-5 with an 8.64 ERA in 11 games with the Gulf Coast Mets.

He made some opposing prospects into top prospects (his opponents’ BA was .300), while walking 13 batters in 16.2 innings on the hill.

At the age of 20, the Venezuelan may end up back in the Gulf Coast League for another year of the Florida heat in 2016.

What a joke this organization really is, how much pain and suffering it has brought us through the years. Bad enough to be in Big Apple with Yankees fans.
