Every year the experts at Baseball America and MLB Pipeline compile their lists of the top 100 prospects in the minors and the top 20 for each major league team. Some of these players do make the show, but many never make it out of low minors. While Mets fans anxiously awaited the arrivals of top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Michael Conforto in 2015, there’s a core of players that will never see Citi Field unless they buy a ticket. Here’s one of the 10 worst prospects in the Mets system in 2015.
How does a guy hitting .305 get released?
If he has an OBP of .323, he does. Pina would collect hits in bunches against weaker pitching.
But his amazingly poor plate abilities were giving managers, scouts and fans gray hair. The outfielder walked just seven times in 233 plate appearances while with Binghamton.
He struck out 57 times, but rarely stood at the plate to witness many offerings by the opposing pitcher, swinging the bat as if it were batting practice or the home run derby.
The Dominican Republic-born Pina is a true example of “You don’t walk off the island.”
Not the most gifted fielder, Pina can be inserted in any slot in the outfield as long as a center fielder who can cover a great deal of ground is in the game.
The Binghamton Mets told Pina to take a walk on July 15, 2015.
