In a rematch of the first National League Championship series, the Braves and the Mets squared off as the World Champions tried to keep pace for division crown as they trailed three game behind the Pirates.
The Mets jumped all over Braves starter Ron Reed in the third inning as Mets starter quieted the Braves bats after being given a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Heading into the 7th inning, Jerry Koosman tired on a warm and humid night. The Braves scored three runs on Clete Boyer’s home run followed by a walk, wild pitch, then chased Koosman in the eight inning scoring another run to cut lead to 7-4.
Danny Frisella replaces Koosman who was greeted by Orlando Cepeda with a two run home run to cut the Mets lead to 7-6.
In the ninth, Ray Sadecki gives up a single Gil Garrido, Oliie Brown moves Garrido to second on a sacrifice.
Manger Gil Hodges brings in starting pitcher Gary Gentry to relieve Sadecki to face future Hall of Famer Hank Aaron.
Aaron crushes a two run homer off Gentry to gives the Braves a 8-7 lead. The Braves then add an insurance run for a 9-7 win before 45,567 at Shea.
