Cliff Floyd, held out of the starting lineup with a sore Achilles', struck out as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning.

Carlos Beltran has eight homers and 18 RBIs in eight games against the Braves this season. Beltran is hitting .282 with 32 homers and an NL-leading 94 RBIs.

The Mets' last three-game sweep in Atlanta was Aug. 14-16, 1979 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

Orlando Hernandez picked up his second regular-season win against the Braves, the first coming on June 2, 2000, when he allowed one run in seven innings for the Yankees.

Carlos Beltran had the 16th multihomer game of his career and third this season.

New York optioned RHP Heath Bell to Triple-A Norfolk to clear a spot for Pedro Martinez.

Mets manager Willie Randolph said he won't mind if the team fails to make a trade-deadline deal to bolster its starting rotation. "I believe in my people," Randolph said. "They've produced all year for me. I'm fine."

Jose Reyes started the game with his fourth leadoff homer this season and sixth of his career.

Julio Franco, making his first start since the All-Star break, made it 2-0 with an RBI single off his former team.

The Mets' 1-0 victory against the Cubs on Wednesday was their third 1-0 victory this season. They also defeated the Braves (April 29 in Atlanta) and the Diamondbacks (May 31 at Shea Stadium, in 13 innings). Their lone 1-0 loss came in St. Louis on May 17.

Mets rookie RHP Brian Bannister, on the 60-day disabled list because of a hamstring injury, allowed four runs -- three earned -- six hits and four walks in five innings in a rehab start for St. Lucie at Lakeland in the Florida State League. Bannister, out since May, threw 83 pitches and had one strikeout.

Pedro Martinez is slated to start Friday night in Atlanta. RHP Heath Bell will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the roster.

Chicago was trying for its first sweep at Shea Stadium since a four-game set in August 1991.

The Mets are 17-5 in Tom Glavine's starts this season. The 40-year-old Glavine gave up a season-high eight runs -- five earned -- and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, dropping to 0-2 in his last six starts.

Greg Maddux is 35-18 in 64 starts against the Mets. He is 14-11 in 30 starts at Shea Stadium.

Mets RHP Pedro Martinez (sore hip) is expected to return to the rotation Friday in Atlanta, and Randolph said the team will go to a six-man rotation for now.

Mets bullpen coach Guy Conti underwent an angioplasty to relieve a clogged artery at Lenox Hill Hospital on Saturday. He is expected to rejoin the team on Monday.

Mike Pelfrey was attempting to become the first Mets pitcher to win his first three starts. Dick Selma (1965) and Gary Gentry (1969) are the only others to win their first two starts.

The Mets, who came into the game leading the National League in first-inning runs with 79, struck quickly again.

New York improved to 21-9 in one-run games, the most such wins in the majors.

Mets 3B David Wright got a day off.

New York RHP Pedro Martinez, on the disabled list with a sore right hip, threw 80 pitches in a simulated game and said he felt strong. He threw all his pitches and said he'd like to start next weekend in Atlanta, as long as he keeps feeling good.

Mets bullpen coach Guy Conti felt ill before the game and checked himself into a local hospital where he was undergoing tests Friday night.

The start of the game was delayed 54 minutes by rain. Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal was a guest on Merengue Night at Shea Stadium.

Jose Valentin's other grand slam this season came on July 8 against Florida.

Cliff Floyd reached over the fence to rob Chris Burke of a home run in the fourth.

Carlos Delgado went 5-for-26 slump on the Mets' trip. Noticed before the All-Star Game, Carlos was edited out from Fox promtion and replaced by Lance Berkman.

While industry buzz was that the Mets and Phillies were engaged in talks that would include a Bobby Abreu-for-Lastings Milledge swap, Mets insiders said yesterday that deal seemed unlikely. Thank God and the Daily News story.

Brian Bannister was slated to pitch in another simulated game yesterday in St. Lucie. Bannister, out with a strained right hamstring, threw 79 pitches in a simulated game Saturday.

Carlos Beltran has already matched the most run-productive season in Mets' history by a center fielder. Beltran's 10th-inning RBI double yesterday has given him 79 RBIs on the year. Brian McRae and Lee Mazzilli both drove in 79 runs in 1998 and 1979, respectively, a total which is the Met high for a center fielder.

Mets minor league pitcher Timothy Haines was suspended for 50 games Thursday for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced. Haines was New York's 27th-round pick in this year's draft out of University of Texas-Pan American. The right-hander was 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA and three saves in 10 games with Single-A Brooklyn.

Jason LaRue's two-run double in the eighth inning sparked the Reds to a 7-4 victory Wednesday night that featured a game-changing delay. The Reds rallied from a 4-0 deficit after the delay, tying it on Rich Aurilia's solo homer in the fifth. Scott Hatteberg started the winning rally with his third hit of the game, a leadoff single in the eighth off Duaner Sanchez.  The Un-Happy Recap >>>

Steve Trachsel threw 21 pitches before the delay, 45 after it. Trachsel looked sharp early, retiring four of the first five hitters he faced. Then the heavens opened, and play didn't continue until nearly two and a half hours later.

The Mets swapped minor league infielders with Kansas City, sending Jeff Keppinger to the Royals for Ruben Gotay. Keppinger played in 33 games with the Mets in 2004. He batted .284, with three home runs and nine RBIs. In 86 games with Norfolk this season, the 26-year-old batted .299 with two homers and 26 RBIs. Gotay, a 23-year-old switch-hitter, batted .264 with nine homers, 43 RBIs, 16 doubles and seven stolen bases in 87 games for Omaha.

Pedro Martinez threw a 60-pitch session in the bullpen on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander, sidelined because of illness and inflammation in his right hip, is expected to throw in a simulated game before returning to the starting rotation, which is expected to happen sometime next week. The Post's Mark Hale writes that Pedro's hip was fine.

Jose Reyes went headfirst into bases twice, showing he won't change his style on the bases. He needed seven stitches for a cut on his hand July 7, when he dived into first base. Stop it Jose, remember Roberto Alomar?

Pedro Martinez is back to a full diet, four days after he was treated at a Chicago hospital for food poisoning. He'll throw in the bullpen on Wednesday. Randolph said Martinez will throw a simulated game near the end of the week, and a decision on his future will be made after that.

Jose Reyes was back at shortstop. He needed seven stitches in the small finger on his left hand after he slid into first base on July 7. Randolph wishes he would stop sliding headfirst, but doubts the infielder will change. "That's his game," Randolph said. "I'm sure he'll be more conscious of it."

Willie Randolph was seen sporting a new salt-and-pepper goatee before Tuesday's game. The manager implemented a clean-shaven rule for his ballclub when he took over in 2005, but has relaxed it this season to include neatly trimmed facial hair. "I've always had this little bit," Randolph said. "It's very distinguished looking."

Jose Reyes should make his return to the lineup on Tuesday at Cincinnati, Mets manager Willie Randolph.

Mike Pelfrey will get a second chance to make a first impression when he starts against the Cincinnati Reds. Pelfrey was the ninth pick in the 2005 lottery and played at Wichita State.

The Daily News Adam Rubin writes "Fonz cool with shot in minors." The 32-year-old infielder had brief stints with the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays this season, but was quickly released by both squads after struggling at the plate. In 12 games with the Blue Jays he batted .162, and was released on June 12.

The Mets' previous high for an inning was 10 runs against Cincinnati in 1979 and Atlanta in 2000.

It marked the first time in club history the Mets had two grand slams in the same inning.

New York, which had 14 hits, had two grand slams this season before Sunday.

Carlos Beltran was in the lineup Saturday after leaving Friday's 6-3 win with soreness in his right knee following a rain delay.

Mets SS Jose Reyes was out of the starting lineup for the fifth consecutive game while recovering from stitches in his left pinkie finger. The injury also kept Reyes out of the All-Star game.

Henry Owens , who gave up four hits and four runs in one inning, was sent to Double-A Binghamton after the game. The Mets called up Heath Bell from Triple-A Norfolk.

Carlos Beltran didn't return to the game after the rain delay with soreness in his right knee. Endy Chavez replaced him. Randolph said Beltran is day-to-day.

Mets RHP Pedro Martinez said he has been ill from possible food poisoning since Tuesday and said he still felt weak Friday. He has been on the DL since July 6 with an inflammation in his right hip.

The Mets are 13-5 when Steve Trachsel starts. Before this season, Trachsel's previous best winning streak was four starts, from Aug. 7-23, 2003.

Remember Royce Ring? When the Mets traded for Ring in the summer of 2003, they figured they were getting the White Sox's 2002 top pick who blistered his way through the opposition at San Diego State. Ring matures as he changes roles.

David Wright homered off the Tigers Kenny Rogers' in his first All-Star Game plate appearance. Rogers threw a camera man at Wright as he rounded the bases.

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, voted in by fans to start for the National League in the All-Star game Tuesday, won't play because of a deep cut on his left pinkie.

David Wright looked impressive in the Home Run Derby. He finished in second behind the Phillies' Ryan Howard.

Xavier Nady assist was his third and the Mets 24th outfield assist. Nady made a diving catch in the seventh to rob Miguel Olivo of an extra-base hit.

New York rookie John Maine (0-3) gave up all three homers, ruining an otherwise effective outing. He allowed six hits in six innings, struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Julio Franco came in for Mets 1B Carlos Delgado's in the fifth inning of the first game. Delgado was hit on the left hand by a pitch in the second. X-rays were negative and he is day to day with a bruise on his knuckle.

The four starting pitchers for Saturday's doubleheader were rookies. The last time two teams started four rookie pitchers in a doubleheader was Toronto at Milwaukee on Aug. 7, 1977. The Blue Jays started Jerry Garvin and Jim Clancy against the Brewers' Lary Sorenson and Moose Haas.

Jose Reyes said he hasn't made a decision about playing in Tuesday's All-Star game. He will make the trip to Pittsburgh regardless of how his pinkie is doing. "You have to go, right?" the first time All-Star said with a smile Saturday.

The Mets' previous high for runs came in a 15-2 win at Arizona on June 11. The 17 runs were the most scored at home by New York in franchise history.

Dontrelle Willis made up his mind on his way to the plate. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning Friday night and New York Mets starter Jose Lima struggling, Willis decided he would swing at the first pitch. Lima made a mistake and Willis sent it soaring an estimated 405 feet over the right-field bullpen, capping a six-run Florida Marlins rally in a 7-3 victory.  The Un-Happy Recap >>>

Jose Reyes, left in the seventh inning with a cut on his left pinky. He appeared to get spiked on a headfirst slide into first base and took seven stitches in the finger. X-rays were negative.

Mets reliever Darren Oliver allowed one hit over five innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

Hard-throwing reliever Henry Owens made his major league debut for the Mets, pitching a perfect ninth with one strikeout.

Mets RHP Mike Adams, designated for assignment on Tuesday, was claimed by the Cleveland Indians.

The Mets took three of four from the Pirates in this series, winning the deciding game as Trachsel (9-3) set a new career high in consecutive victories, limiting the Pirates to three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. The Mets placed Pedro Martinez on the disabled list. Martinez has made several trips to the disabled list but none since signing with the Mets.

Steve Trachsel improved to 5-8 against the Pirates although he had not pitched against Pittsburgh since April 17, 2004. He last beat the Pirates on Sept. 24, 2003.

Jose Reyes raised his NL-leading stolen base total to 39, stealing second in both the third and fourth innings.

Orlando Hernandez baffled the Pirates on four hits through seven innings, pitching the Mets to a 5-0 victory that had its troubling side for New York. It was the second straight victory for the Mets after they had lost six of seven. Pedro Martinez (sore hip) delayed his throwing session one day. After he throws Thursday, the Mets will decide whether he will start Saturday or go on the disabled list.

Rickey Henderson was a visitor in the Mets clubhouse.

The five-run first inning gave the Mets 70 opening-inning runs this season, second only to the Chicago White Sox, who scored four Wednesday night and have 78.

Scott Kazmir, the Devil Rays lone All-Star representative, is the youngest pitcher (22) to win 10 games this early in a season since John Smoltz did it back in 1989 with the Atlanta Braves. He is 3-1 against the Red Sox this season and improved his overall career mark against Boston to 5-2 in 11 starts. He remains a must-start in all Fantasy formats, unlike Victor Zambrano for the New York Mets. Always have to throw that in there.

Alay Soler was sent down to Norfolk to make room for John Maine. Soler complained about some tightness in his right calf and will be examined by a doctor before he reports to Norfolk.

Tom Glavine needs one win to tie Bert Blyleven for 24th place on the career wins list with 287 victories.

Cliff Floyd made a nice sliding catch in the sixth and seventh to take a hit away from Jose Castillo each time.

The New York Yankees appeared to be headed for a long night, until two big swings by Alex Rodriguez made it an easy one. Rodriguez hit a grand slam and a three-run homer, sending the Yankees to a 16-7 blowout of the Mets in their Subway Series finale.  The UN-Happy Recap >>>

New York Mets third baseman David Wright on Monday was named National League Player of the Month for June.

Paul Lo Duca called A-Rod a bitch after he hit his grand slam. The Mets catcher was angry with the way Rodriguez watched his grand slam and tossed his bat away, yelling at the third baseman as he crossed home plate.

Mets ace Pedro Martinez will miss his scheduled turn Monday night against Pittsburgh because of a sore hip.

Steve Trachsel won his fifth straight start and the Mets roughed up Johnson for the second time this year, snapping their four-game slide with an 8-3 victory over the Yankees. Paul Lo Duca had three hits and two RBIs for the Mets. Ramon Castro's two-run single keyed a five-run fourth for the NL East leaders, who scored just eight runs during their losing streak yet still began the day with a 10 1/2 -game cushion in the division. The Happy Recap >>>

Mets 1B Carlos Delgado sat out for the third consecutive game with an ailing ribcage.

Steve Trachsel and Yankees slugger Jason Giambi were teammates at Long Beach State in 1991 on a team that went to the College World Series.

Paul Lo Duca was the DH again because of a bruised left thumb.

Five pitchers combined on a one-hitter, and Jason Giambi homered again in a rain-delayed 2-0 victory over the suddenly slumping Mets. Orlando Hernandez (4-8) pitched seven effective innings against his former team, returning to the mound following a 63-minute delay in the fourth. The Mets optioned OF Lastings Milledge to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Cliff Floyd, who went 0-for-3 in his first game since June 6. He had been out with a sprained ankle.

The Mets took two of three from the Yankees at Shea Stadium in May.
