For the first time, the Mets will hold an exclusive "Mets Workout Day at Shea" on Sunday for season ticket and ticket plan holders to watch the Mets' final preparation for the 2006 season. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. ET, with the Mets scheduled to take batting practice at 12:30 p.m.

On Monday, Tom Glavine will ascend the mound at Shea Stadium in his third Opening Day start for the Mets. The left-hander ended 2005 on a high note, posting a 1.79 ERA in his final 10 starts, and is confident that success will carry over into this year.

Jose Reyes hit a two-run triple and scored a pair of runs, but Jose Lima allowed five runs in the first inning -- all with two outs -- as the Mets fell to the Marlins, 12-7, on Tuesday in Jupiter, Fla.

Hoping to join the rotation after serving as an effective reliever in 2005, Aaron Heilman was disappointed when he was informed on Tuesday that he'd be returning to the 'pen, while rookie Brian Bannister was excited to be added to the starting staff.

The paint wasn't dry on the Mets' 2005 season when the club's hierarchy began planning to refurbish the bullpen for 2006. More than a new coat of a new color was planned. Phillies closer Billy Wagner was going to file for free agency. And the Mets thought they had a chance to trade for Devil Rays closer Danys Baez. General manager Omar Minaya planned to load up and create a killer bullpen.

Tom Glavine will make his seventh career Opening Day start after Pedro Martinez, who is recovering from a toe injury, excused himself from the assignment. Martinez is confident he will make his first start soon after, possibly April 5 vs. the Nationals.

Three right-handed pitchers were assigned to Minor League camp Wednesday -- Mike Pelfrey, who made a positive impression in his first experience as a professional, Bartolome Fortunato, who allowed four runs in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday, and Jeremi Gonzalez, whose Spring Training star seemed to fade a bit in the last two weeks.

With less than two weeks remaining before Opening Day, the Mets have shut down closer Billy Wagner because of irritation in the middle finger of his pitching hand. Wagner will not throw until the weekend at the earliest, according to manager Willie Randolph.

The competition for the Mets' second-base job took another twist Friday with the news that Kazuo Matsui will be out for three weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament.

A trio of Mets -- Carlos Delgado (elbow), Victor Zambrano (back) and Juan Padilla (elbow) -- met with Dr. David Altchek, the club's primary physician on Friday, while Tom Glavine and Cliff Floyd were hurting over separate off-the-field matters.

Xavier Nady racked up four base hits and six RBIs, including a grand slam, and Carlos Delgado went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Mets past the Cardinals, 12-7, in their Cactus League opener Thursday. Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols clubbed three-run homers for the Cards.
