Worst Prospects of 2015: Jose Celas

Jose Celas
Brooklyn Cyclones starting pitcher Jose Celas (44) throws in the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Tri-City Valley Cats at MCU Park in Brooklyn, June 24, 2015.

Every year the experts at Baseball America and MLB Pipeline compile their lists of the top 100 prospects in the minors and the top 20 for each major league team. Some of these players do make the show, but many never make it out of low minors. While Mets fans anxiously awaited the arrivals of top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Michael Conforto in 2015, there’s a core of players that will never see Citi Field unless they buy a ticket. Here’s one of the 10 worst prospects in the Mets system in 2015.

The 24-year-old Venezuelan starting pitcher showed some promise as a long man out of the bullpen.

If he were a lefty, he could make to the major leagues. But he is not a lefty.

In 112 innings pitched over five seasons, Celas has walked 83 batters and fanned 96 hitters.

In 2015 he walked 32 batters while striking out only 13 batters.

Celas helped raised opponents’ OBP with a wide assortment of pitches out of the strike zone.

In 2015 he threw 362 pitches, only 167 of which were rung up as strikes by beleaguered umpires in eight games.

One game against the Tigers in Connecticut, the official scorer came down with carpal tunnel syndrome while counting balls and strikes with Celas on the mound.

Posting a 1-2 record with a 4.29 ERA for Brooklyn in 2015, Celas was never the pitcher of record on the winning side and failed to make it through the fifth inning in any of his five starts in 2015.

Catchers often needed two days off after catching Celas, and the Cyclones bullpen was worn down after his starts.

Opposing batters were told by hitting coaches, don’t swing.

Celas may be back with Brooklyn again in 2016 following the footsteps of Carlos Valdez.
