Worst Prospects of 2015: Branden Kaupe

Every year the experts at Baseball America and MLB Pipeline compile their lists of the top 100 prospects in the minors and the top 20 for each major league team. Some of these players do make the show, but many never make it out of low minors. While Mets fans anxiously awaited the arrivals of top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Michael Conforto in 2015, there’s a core of players that will never see Citi Field unless they buy a ticket. Here’s one of the 10 worst prospects in the Mets system in 2015.

The Brooklyn Cyclones infielder Branden Kaupe led the N.Y.-Penn League in strikeouts resulting in a putout at 1B.

This illustrates the poor plate discipline Kaupe showed in 2015, swinging at pitches so far out of the strike zone that catchers couldn’t handle them.

Kaupe batted a sizzling .151 in 2015 and struck out 44 times in 118 plate appearances.

Kaupe wore the golden sombrero twice during the 2015 season, striking out four times vs. Aberdeen on Aug. 23 and in his final game as a Cyclone on Sept. 3.

He could not break the weak Cyclones lineup and sat on the bench behind the awful Alfredo Reyes.

His fielding reminded fans he was no flyin’ Hawaiian.

He constantly misplayed balls and was not able to reach slow rollers in the hole.

Haupe’s fielding percentage at shortstop was .897 in 2015; he committed nine errors in 29 starts as a utility infielder.

Simple pop-ups were an adventure, as opposing players were told to run out everything hit his way.

On Oct. 6, 2015, Kaupe was released. Aloha!

What a joke this organization really is, how much pain and suffering it has brought us through the years. Bad enough to be in Big Apple with Yankees fans.
